Footpath Fix

27th July 2018 by Leave a Comment

The Footpath Fix is a step-by-step guide on footpath construction detailing for urban designers, municipal engineers, and contractors. Cities across India now acknowledge that walking plays a fundamental role in everyday life. Thereupon, good quality footpaths must be provided to make walking safe and attractive.

Basic footpath design standards such as the optimal height, adequate width, continuous and obstacle-free surface are detailed in the first volume of the Footpath Series – Footpath Design.

Attention to construction details, especially that of different utilities is articulated in this second volume – Footpath Fix. Several footpath projects have failed due to improper construction and execution; thus, this guide aims to highlight the steps, in a chronological order, from pre-excavation to above-ground construction.  It also features necessary precautions, drawing from experience on-ground, that must be taken into consideration at each stage of construction.

Mobility for all at Ranchi

20th July 2015 by Leave a Comment

Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkand is fast urbanising. Though the state remains largely rural, Ranchi and the other cities have been rapidly growing with the influx of people from the hinterland in search of opportunity. These cities need to be planned and manage to provide a safe, affordable, attractive and inclusive environment for the citizens.
With a good transport system comes better connect between people and also more sustainability- socially, economically and environmentally.

The lack of a formalized public transport system in Ranchi has led to dependence on private vehicles and paratransit for day-to-day travel, congestion and safety issues.  While most of the new transport initiatives deal with road widening and flyovers, there have been no concrete efforts to address the people’s need and propose genuine solutions.

The Ranchi Mobility Charter, developed by the Ranchi Mobility Partnership led by ITDP calls for a development model that focuses on a high-quality bus based transport system, parking management and a pedestrian friendly outlook.

Pre-feasibility study for sustainable transport interventions in Ranchi

10th August 2014 by Leave a Comment

An important regional hub in eastern India, Ranchi has historically been a cycling and walking-centric city with narrow streets and dense urban fabric. But with its outward expansion, there is higher demand for mobility and increased use of motorized transport, leading to congestion & safety issues. Thus this report looks at identifying existing travel demand patterns, nature of existing infrastructure, assessing road-space usage and the issues with governance and implementation of projects; all of which lead to the possibility of developing and implementing various sustainable transport initiatives.
